California elections officials say state is prepared to defend election integrity

California Secretary of State Shirley Weber held a roundtable discussion emphasizing the state’s readiness to combat potential interference by the Trump administration in the weeks leading up to the election on November 3. This discussion occurred just before the Trump administration initiated a lawsuit against California election officials, accusing them of allowing 20,000 alleged noncitizens to vote. Weber pointed out that while the U.S. Department of Justice provided a list of names, it did not present supporting evidence for its claims, as noncitizen voting is exceedingly rare according to several experts.

At the roundtable, Weber highlighted that the state has developed contingency plans to respond to any attempts at federal election interference. California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated that the Trump administration’s request related to alleged noncitizens would infringe on federal laws that protect voter rolls close to an election. Concerns have been raised about potential federal agents monitoring elections or seizing ballots. A late August poll indicated that over 60% of Californians are worried about federal interference, while about 40% expressed concern over voter fraud.
